Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 - 1987

"This movie is so bogus. It really is." - Loudmouth in Theater

New producers get the idea to make some cash off the frenzy that surrounded the release of the original Silent Night, Deadly Night by doing as little work as possible and the result is this little waste of time. While there are some it's so bad it's funny moments, we're all familiar with the “It's garbage day!” videos floating around cyberspace, the total lack of new footage makes this film avoidable by anyone's standards.

When we catch up with little Ricky, the younger brother of psycho Santa Billy from the first film, we learn he's been spending time in an asylum. Where his favorite pastimes are chain-smoking and scaring orderlies. Before Ricky's story can be told, we get an insanely long recap of the original movie. And that's just the start of the bad news.

We have to sit through almost 40 minutes of footage from the first film with Ricky interjecting such intelligently crafted lines like, “Naughty. Very naughty.” Even though Ricky shouldn't have any knowledge of what happened. When his parents were murdered, he was just an infant. And he recounts his brother Billy's murder spree as if he saw it happen, when Billy was killed before he had a chance to relate the tale to anyone. If you've seen the original recently before watching this one, you're going to be bored to tears. So keep plenty of frosty beverages on hand, you're really going to need them. The only distraction from the tedium of the reused material is that they make sure to include a shot from all of the nude scenes from the first.

We finally get to the story of why Ricky has been put away. Apparently seeing an attempted rape reminded him of the attack on his mother, which he shouldn't have any memory of anyway. But, he snaps and dispatches the would-be attacker and the rapists target, instead of freaking out and screaming , just thanks him. Awesome. Then we learn that the color red also flips Ricky's trigger. Why? Santa suit? An allergy to strawberries? Who knows.

Then, not wanting to miss yet another opportunity to throw recycled footage at us, Ricky takes a date to the movies and it turns out to be Silent Night, Deadly Night. The title is never actually shown, but the footage is instantly recognizable. And Jennifer, Ricky's date, describes the movie as being “about this guy that dresses up as Santa Claus and kills people.” What the hell?

Ricky's murder spree begins, finally, and it's as over the top as anything you will ever see in a b-movie. While the umbrella murder is pretty interesting, the handgun Ricky has packs more punch than a bazooka. He shoots a moving vehicle one time, and it flips over and does the magical movie car thing of exploding for no real reason. The coup de grace is the Mother Superior, now being played be a different actress than we saw a couple of minutes ago, has a strange make-up appliance. It's supposed to show she had a stroke, but it actually makes her look like one of the underground dwelling mutants from Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

This could have been good b-movie fare, the writers and directors took a tongue-in-cheek approach. The producer's just didn't want a new movie, so the audience is left to suffer. By the time the real Part 2 finally started, I had lost interest. On top of that, there's no new Christmas scenes until the last ten minutes of the movie. If you need a Christmas horror flick to fill you with holiday spirit, grab the first one.
