Shriek of the Sasquatch! - 2011

"Where's the body? The bones? That alone tells me it's not real." - Nick

Nick and Julie are on their way to her father's house. Unfortunately, they decide to stay the night in a small town where the deputy is investigating a rash of bigfoot sightings - and a number of strange deaths.

The movie opens with a guy wearing a bad rug photographing a lovely young lady in the woods. That's a good start and I was expecting nothing less. It's written and directed by Steve Sessions, who made one of my favorite low-budget, horror anthologies, Cremains. So, I was prepared for a fun night of b-movie horror. I didn't get quite what I expected, but it was pretty good.

A great job was done giving the movie a '70s feel. All the bases were covered, from clothes and hairstyles to cars and music. I loved the film damage and sound pops, too. There was even a character based on Leonard Nimoy and In Search Of, Lester Nimsy, who narrates a show about Bigfoot. That part of the movie works well.

I could have done without the park visit/driving montage that was accompanies by heavy guitar strumming. I'm not sure it this was an effort to add more retro flair or just an opportunity to throw in some filler. Maybe that should have been my cue to get another beer.

I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt to the Sasquatch costume and say that it was used as part of the '70s look. Otherwise, it just looks bad. But I really think that's part of what he was going with here. Besides the costume, there's a lot more fun. There's plenty of dismembered body parts, blood and an hysterical van attack. That van attack scene is going down in history. You can tell it's a model, but that's half the fun. We went back over that scene a few times before we could go on. Bravo!

Scarlet Salem, now known by her real name, Sarah French, and Donny Versiga, do a good job performing as Julie and Nick. Jenn Ruliffson being interviewed by the deputy is highly entertaining, but I'm glad it was shortened a bit for the movie. And I really feel for Deanna Meske who has hitchhiking to Cali. First off, she should have chosen a highway, or at least a road that gets some traffic. Secondly, that huge Farrah wig must have been hot as hell.

There are a few things I'm not particularly fond of. A lot of the movie is Nick and Julie either driving around listening to the radio or bullshitting about Bigfoot and Karma. Just when this starting to get really old - something actually happened. Seems to be the pace of the movie. The attacks just seem to happen at random to add to the body count. Which is better than not having any attacks, but we don't really know if the attacks are related or just because. There is some suspense towards the end of the movie, but the build up was a long time coming.

The "twist" ending was original to the Bigfoot genre, but a little too drawn out. Even slightly intoxicated, we had enough evidence to figure it out when we were supposed to. But, we had to sit through multiple flashbacks of something that happened just a few minutes before. And I don't recall actually hearing the Sasquatch's shriek.

Overall, this is a good Beer Night B-Movie selection. Nice mixture of comedy with the horror, which always helps. I really like the scene where a woman is cheating on her boyfriend with another man. Love his reaction to a shadow. There's plenty of blood and body parts. Some of the live body parts are supplied by models Michelle “Violetta Storms” Trasatti and Mona Duvera.

The copy of Shriek of the Sasquatch! that I reviewed is NOT the final edit for DVD release. Some things will be cut, including a couple of issues I noted in the review. The official version is scheduled for release on DVD on January 10, 2012.
